In Dr. Kennedy's book "The Melungeons" The resurrection of a proud People. There is a name of Nelson listed as Pamunky/powhatan Indian. I have an ancestor with the last name Nelson from Virginia. Here is the in formation on This name.
Daniel Tarlton Vaughan B. 1769 culpper Va.
D. 1825 Willowcreek, near McKenneysburg,Pendleton Co. Kentucky
Married 1791 to margaret Nelson in Culpper Virginia. Their children were
Atwell ,Elizabeth ,John,mary,catherine,matilda,tarlton.
Margaret must have Died in Kentuckey before 1811 because Tarlton married again that year to Frances whitehead.
I would like to find out if maybe Margaret could have been Pamunky Indian. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you,

Waitman,
You might check out the link that Techteach just posted in the "Joseph T. Butts of Berkeley Co., WV" thread. Scroll down to the "Useful Links" and click on "Vaughn/Vaughan & Related Families". I didn't notice the specific names that you mentioned, but there was a Nelson married to a Vaughan (mid-1800s).

I came here looking for info on my husbands Merten/Martin line and a possibility of George Merten married to a Native American. But then I found the Vaughn/ Vaughan discussion. My family descends from Thomas Vaughan bn ca 1720 Charlotte Pittsylvania, VA through his daughter Jerusha bn 1753 Culpepper, VA married 1. Isaac Farris married 2. Bird.
We also descend from Swearingens, and I see someone on the forum has them in their genealogy.

Colorado Granny,
I have Swearingens twice over. One line is not a direct ancestor to me but related in the line of a cousin who now has remembered Shawnee language that he was taught. This was the group of Greens and Butts.
The second Swearingen is in my direct line. There is not rumor of NA in this line but neither has it been ruled out from that line either. A daughter is thought to have married Tomlinson whose daughter then married a Carpenter. The Carpenters were my grandfather's line. The Greens and Butts are my grandmother's line. Both families were located in an around the panhandle of WV. The Butts and Greens were near Martinsburg while the Carpenters were nearer Wheeling.

Mine are Drusilla (married John Wilson) daughter of John son of Van son of Thomas son of Garret VanSwearingen. They settled in Washington County, PA at the mouth of the Cheat River and then on to KY. Unfortunately I don't find any Native American connections. The closest we came was the Blue Jacket farce which was disproven through DNA. He was supposed to have been Marmaduke brother of Drusilla.

Any idea why one was called "Indian" Van Swearingen?

I have not heard of Indian Swearingen. He probably would not be in my line.
More than likely you are aware of the discussions on genforum about Blue Jacket. If not here is a link:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?forum=swearingen&url=%2Fswearingen%2F&path=%2Fswearingen%2F&terms=Karel+White&boolean=AND
Karel White seemed (a post on genforum says she passed away)
to be an authority on Swearingen, and I think she wrote a book.
If you havent already - check this forum.

Yes, I know the Bluejacket discussion. Indian Van Swearingen was related to Marmaduke, but I am not sure how. There were several Van Swearingens. They are called by different nicknames to keep them straight, as I understand it. Indian Van moved to PA and served as sheriff of Washington (County?), PA if I remember correctly.
I am from Rebecca Swearingen who married Joseph Tomlinson. They had a daughter Drucilla who marries my direct Carpenter ancestor, my grandfather's side.
Joseph Tomlinson is known for his participation in the murder of Chief Logan's family.
Elizabeth Swearingen marries into a branch of my Green/Butt line who are ancestors of my grandmother's side.
Interestingly enough, both lines go back to the same church in Anne Arundel, MD.
