Other Tutelo resources

I have the minagi (book), _The Tutelo Language_ by Horatio Hale, but I am wondering what other resources ther are out there. I now have a basic grasp of the grammar, but my vocabulary is still very limited, and I think that this is in part because of the vocabulary sources that are available to me.

On a tangential but not entirely unrelated note, as I live in Massachusetts, I have been following the Wampanoag language project with interest. The Wampanoag are trying to revive their language, Wo^pana^ak, using a collection of texts from the 17th to the 19th centuries. I am wondering what is being done along similar lines for Tutelo. I have visited the Occaneechi Saponi website and I have seen a collection of nice drawings of animals with their Tutelo names for children, but I am curious to know about any other efforts or projects.

P.S. My name, 'Todd', come from the Scots-Irish and means 'Fox', so I figured I would call myself 'Tohkai' (also meaning 'Fox') in Tutelo, unless of course someone can come up with something better. (Oh boy, what am I getting myself into?)

I think this is absolutely wonderful. I'm not up on any recent efforts in this area. I haven't gotten my book yet. I keep saying i'm going to and then I get side tracked. You have just renewed my excitement for this. I guess I'd better get my book so we can get at it! It looks to me like you've made some progress with this. So, there's hope!:) Keep me appraised if you find out anything and I'll do likewise. I know Kerry is excited to get into this too. No, he hasn't gotten his book yet either! So, Tohkai, Let me know if you figure out the words for RainHawk. Son Of Bear gave me a better idea of what it is in Lakota. But it has to be Tutelo, ya' know?;) Does the Tutelo seem to be anything like Lakota? I've been curious about that. Lakota is the only language, besides German I've ever worked with. I was hoping that if they are at all similar then I might catch on at a snails pace which would be better than nothing! Love & Light and WAY AWSOME! Lynella. Just a quick reply.

Tutelo and Lakota are fairly closely related. I would say that they are about as close as English and German.

The Tutelo word for rain is 'hawoha' or 'qawoqa'. (The sound represented by either dotted 'h' or 'q' is pronounced as German 'ch' or like clearing your throat.) I was not able, however to find the word for 'hawk'.

I believe that the Lakota word for 'hawk' is 'cetan' or 'chetan', so maybe you can use the name 'Hawoha Chetan' for the time being, if that suits you.

You are very right!:) Chetan is the word for hawk in Lakota. The older spelling is, C'etan. I like your idea!:) Somewhere I have Son Of Bear's translation of it. I should dig it out just to see again what it was, but yes. I will start using Hawoha Chetan or C'etan, either way. I'm so used to using the old spelling that I might just stick to that unless it is actually a gender specific thing?????;) Hmmmmm, I wonder. Thank you and bless you Tohkai, Love & Light, Lynella. I believe that in the Lakota language the words are not arranged as they are in English- for example, Black Eagle Man is said like this in Lakota: Wicasa (Man) Wanbli (Eagle) Sapa (Black)
(Wicasa is pronounced 'wachasha')

This is my husbands name :)


Just some FYI! My husband and I sing on a ceremonial drum and though I know the words, I am just learning how to spell/arrange them.

That's what I always thought. That's the way I was arranging it in the past. I think I will find Son of Bear's version because I want to find their word for rain/water and see how close it is to Tutelo. When I find it, I'll come back and post it here. so we can compare. I used to write it out like this, Mine Ahtah C'etan. Mine Ahtah has essentially a few meanings, 1 life giving waters (rain) 2 Father water, and Son of Bear said that in this case it is all in the way the person using it wishes to convey what his meaning is or how he wishes to make his point. So that's when he gave me the other word. And now I gotta' go find it.......;)

WELL...I tried to just pull his quote to here but it didn't work , because I have no clue about such things:o and I botched it really major, big time! So, this is what he translated my RainHawk as in Lakota. Ma'gaju-Cek'an.

Darn, Ma'gaju doesn't look at all like Hawoha!;) Well, I'm sure we'll find the Tutelo version of Hawk somewhere along the way. Right now I'll use the mixed version and write it like this, Hawoha Cek'an. There, a bit of both versions for now. Don't worry I won't let it cause me an identity crisis!:) Love & Light, Hawoha Cek'an.

P.S. 2Crows, thank you for helping out with that. I need all the input I can get, always!;) I Love Ya'. Oh, and your husband's name is beatiful. And yeah, I know what you're saying about the arrangement of the words. I wish I knew how to pull Cikala-Mato's post over here. He explained it so well. But you can pull up his name on the members list and click on what his last post was and then ya' got it.
