Hello all,

I am new to this site and was hoping that I might find some info and maybe find some kind friends and kindred spirts looking for family.

I was actually at another horrid board and introduced myself and practically got attacked from a "regular" who I guess did not like "newcomers".

A kind person who is a regular here saw my post and recommended that I come here because of the kind and gentle atmosphere. So here I am.

I have very little info on my NA side of my family. I am searching for information on the Lee family. The Lee family was Cherokee. From what it looks like they moved around alot. My ggrandmother was named Carrie Lee. She was born August 24,1891 in Illinois. She married Charlie Bryer. She has a sister named Bessie Lee I am not sure of her married name. Carries mother was Louise Lee. Her father was Sam Lee. I have a roll number for Carrie but I am unsure if its the right person.. My gradmother said that she remembers her aunt, mother, and grandmother signing the rolls...I am not sure which ones.

My father grew up in a home where cherokee was spoken. He would get in trouble for speaking "mexican"- actually cherokee- at school.

My grandmother said her moms or grandmothers indian name was red wing. She also said one of the indian names was La-wa-ha (sp?)---If I remember right...she said that meant dawn or rising sun??

There is little definite info because my branch moved west and all those who know more are all passed-on.... I am feeling rather alone and don't know where to look next.

From what I understand and have been told the "Lee" surname had been changed from "Teehe". I have a little more information about the family if any one has a possible connection or can help me please respond.

HELLO! I'm glad to see you made it.

These people here are the nicest in the world and if anyone can help you get started they can.

I know you are nervous coming to a new forum! It's ok.

Be sure to let everyone know that there is no one living who can help you. I know you must feel really alone and being on that other forum among the "hostiles' didn't help much.

If you can, you should insert the names you are researching into the title of your thread..it may be too late for you to change it but perhaps the forum admin can help. People tend to see the names and stop to chat if they are familiar!

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

I am Brenda, one of the older members of the forum. I was born in the hills of West Virginia. I am mixed blood but only claim to be 100% "hillbilly" which to me means I am a survivor. I am proud of all those that made me what I am.

The people on this forum are eager to help in any way they can.
Just give the names and date ( birth and death if available) and the place that each of these occured.

TIP: If you want to add something to your first posting go to the bottom of your post to the button marked "edit". That brings the screen back into play....add what you forgot and click "post".

Welcome on board, and good luck with your search.

Brenda :)

Hello Lovesblueskies - welcome to the forum. :D My sister and I are both on this forum - her name is Lynella. We don't know very much about our NA heritage either. We've always heard stories of NDN blood in the family and our family is an old family in america. So we both started looking. I have done alot of research on my Dad's side of the family but we hadn't done very much on my mothers side and we believe thats where the NA blood lines come from. I have been extremly pleased with the folks on this forum - they've been a tremendous help and weve been making steady progress. So - stick around, give us some info to start working with and I'm sure someone on this forum will be able to point you in a good direction.

howdy --

Teehee is a very common Cherokee surname and it means "Killer".

If your ancestor was born in Illinios they would only appear on the rejected rolls, as noone was accepted that lived outside the Cherokee Nation. I have a copy of Cherokee Guion-Miller 1909 rolls and didn't find your Lee's, not the ones you mentioned. Maybe you can try the Baker (1924 for Cherokee in NC) or the Dawes (1906 or so to about 1909 for Oklahoma Cherokee).

Where did your ancestors live before 1891? There is a website that translates Cherokee into English. Do you speak any Cherokee? Have you checked the 1880 or 1896 census of the Cherokee Nation?

good luck

Are you aware of NAIL/NARA websites? Go there and find the site nearest you. You can call or email them and for a small fee they will look up the original roll record of your "Lee". It will tell some information of the family. Someone will ask htem questions and their answers will appear. If this is your ancestor, you can find out.

Good luck.

Have Cherokee Lee's on it from Dawes

What I supplied was "Cherokee by Blood". Notice the list of Cherokee by Marriage, or the Freedmen, or the New-borns.

Hi LovesBlueSkies,
They did indeed move around. Carrie also had a sister named Sophia, as well as a daughter of the same name. Louise is their mother's name. You'll have to take their parents' "place of birth" as listed in 1920 with a grain of salt and a grin, but here they are in 1920 and 1930 census records.

1920 Shelby Co., Tenn census; ED286 Memphis (city); 21st Ward; 15 January 1920; living at 764 Lewis St.; pg.240A (sheet 3A),

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. It's nice to have others be kind and supportive!

I plan on leaving another thread with more family info so that everyone can see my surnames immediately and hopefully I will have enough info to help. So please keep your eyes out for me.:)

Again thank you all,
Cathy

Bill,
thank you for finding the census info. I have seen some of it but the other i did not see. I plan on leaving another message to start a new thread but I did want to mention that the Sophia Goad listed as the wife of Jos. Goad....I believe she is the aunt my grandma mentioned as signing the roll (which ones I dont know).

From what I have seen the family seems to move around a lot and probably appear in different censuses for the different years.

They also seem to have different races for where they lived (listed as white in Illinois and Cherokee in other places that may be safer to do so) and different places of birth or places where their parents were born....makes that searching all the harder for me....:)

Cathy,
Yeah, not easy to find.
In 1920 Sedgwick Co., Ks ED154 Wichita 3rd Pct., pg.257B,
Joe and Sophie Goad (their son "Dude" is named "Travis") were living next door to Andy BRYER, 63, b.Canada, "Laborer- Orchard"; and his wife Bell, 44, b.Va., with children
Bill, 21, b.Mo.
John, 16, b.ILL.
Oliver, 14, b.Ark.
Robert, 12, ILL.
Geriane (dau) 10, b.Ks.
Marie, 5, b.Ark.

Andy Bryer immigrated to the US from Canada in 1866 and was Naturalized in 1870 per the 1920 census.
I think these Bryers may be Charlie Bryer's parents and siblings.
In 1930, Andy and Bell Bryer are living in Little Rock, Arkansas with their older children. Andy is also listed as 63 on this census.
:) I can't find them in 1910 or earlier, either!

Hi Bill,

Yes, Andy and Bell Bryer are Charlie Bryers parents wow.

I have not written a new thread yet because I have some key info at my mothers house and I was going to get it tonight.

The reason that you might not have found Andy and his family any farther back is that they moved around a lot too.
I think they were travelling people.

Andy Bryer might have gone by Antone or A. Bryer/ Brier. Bell's maiden name was Broadway but I dont know if Bell was short for anything. I am uncertain of any degree or how much of a degree of indian blood either of them have. My family is all mixed up and its all confusing.

I will post another message tonight and try to include as much info as I can on my family so that you can get a more complete picture of my line.

I really appreciate all that you have found thus far.:)

Cathy,
It's quite possible (at least in my mind) that the BRYER family was migrating with the seasons (Andy worked in an Orchard) until sometime in the 1920's when all of the Bryer males had become Mechanics by the time of the 1930 census.
The 1930 Pulaski Co., Ark census - ED31 Little Rock, Big Rock Twp; 15 July; pg.292A (sheet 28A) (This is an "extra" sheet, added after the census taker had "signed off" on his work).
All are supposedly living at 3201 E. Third St.

BRYER, Allie; Head; m, W, 24, m'd@23; Ark, Canada, Va.
.........., Lillie; wife; f, W, 19, m'd@18; South Dak, NY, Ohio.
.........., Bill; Head; m, W, 34, m'd@22, Mo, Canada, Va.
.........., Sophia; wife, f, W, 38, m'd@26, Mich, Okla, Okla.
.........., Charles; son, m, W, 18, single; Tenn, Mo, Mich.
.........., John; Head, m, W, 26, m'd@25, ILL, Canada, Va.
.........., Betty; wife, f, W, 22, m'd@22, Okla, Va, ILL.
.........., ANDY; Head, m, W, 63, m'd@21, Canada, England,England
.........., BELLE; wife, f, W, 58, m'd@17, Va, England, England.
.........., Mary M.; dau, f, W, 14, single, Ark, Canada, Va.

There is no "visit" number assigned because it looks like the census taker did not actually "visit" them. A vertically written notation in the area of the census between their ages and place of birth appears to be.....
"All now camping unk
None information"
I don't think the census taker actually talked to any of them and that this information may have been supplied by a neighbor or landlord, hence some of the ages are off. Race as listed on census records is notoriously inaccurate. This census lists Andy's year of Immigration as "1885", not 1870.
The occupation of all "Head" of households is "Mechanic - Garage" except for Andy's which lists "none".
Bill
