Julie,

I lost my husband in 2001 and because of health issues I had to move in with my daughter. We moved to this house about a year ago. It is a little village about 7 miles north of Fall River by the name of Assonet. The village got it's name from the local Indians. It is a quaint little village, very friendly but don't blink when passing by or you just might miss it.

I was born in the mountains of West Virginia, a real hillbilly. It is nice to be able to communicate with somebody close with some of the same interest.

BTW You should be real proud of those marks.

Your words are so comforting.
Thank you. It hasn't been easy being a single mother of three.
I want to go on and be not only a role model for my children, but for the NA community as well.

Congrats Julia - I am so very, very proud of you. I too go to school and, I know how difficult it can be!
I am married with two kids and, studying is a pick-a-quiet-time-of-the-day-when-you-can-get-it!! :D
I am graduating in May this year with a AAS degree in Human Services. I have been nominated to the Who Who's Among American Two-Year Colleges. I am trying to graduate with highest honors (Summa cum laude 3.8) however, I currently have a 3.657 close but not close enough. I just finished this Fall semester with a 4.0 so, I will be on the President's List.
I am in the Human Services Club, Alpha Delta Omega (National Honors Society for the Human Services Field), Phi Theta Kappa (National Honors Scholastic Society-promoting leadership, scholarship and service) note: this should help us out in community awareness, I'm working on something at campus and, hopefully I'll be elected vice-president soon. Also, I am in the Transfer Program Club (Students that are transferring to four year colleges) note: I will be attending Bluefield College this fall and enrolling in Adult accelerated degree program for Social Science (15 months I'll have my Bachelor's Degree in Behavioral Science. I can't wait!! I'm sure that I will go for my Master's also.
I know how busy life can be for you so, if you need a buddy to talk too...I'M HERE FOR YOU, and I know that everyone else is too!

Good luck and God Bless,

Love, Felicia

Good to know!
I have several projects in the air...I'm writing a piece on Red, Black and White Indians. Needless to say, Its an ugly topic, but needs to be writen by US! Recently, I have been employed to workat the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. This gives me an oppertunity to flex my knowlege regarding Paleoarchaeology and gather new information as well.
Keep those awards coming. They play an important part when seeking higher employment and status in the community as well as the work force!

My work has been supported by THe Rhode Island Committee for the Humanities, The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, The Rhode Island Foundation, RSDI, The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology (Brown University) and others. I am also listed in Who's Who in America, 1000 Greatest Americans, The National Registry for Native American artists, Who's Who in Women, and The Biographical Centre, Cambridge England for my contributions in Native American art, culture and language reconstruction.

Lyn,
I think this way because I'm nuts.
I'm feeling a little blue. I don't go out much and I don't have many friends or much of a social life at the moment., except for my cyber-space family. You guys really light-up my day as well. If I can only walk away from the milk and cookies!!!
I want to write an article for an Archaeology mag: The importance of basket weaving. The psychological, spritual and cultural connections it has for us as Native people today.
Any thoughts?

Julie,

That is an excellent idea for an article!:) Most definately, go for it. Depending on which magazine you query first, I'd see what their usual thength for a main line story like that, but I'd shoot for say about 1500 to 2000 words. Toss in a few photo's or illustrations of the process and go along the slant too, that it is so theraputic or such an artform that its almost poetic, but base it off the ancient ways so people really understand what knowledge our ancestors utilized and it was so functional too! Never sell all rights to any piece because you can resell it in a few years or reword it to suit another slant on the same theme. Offer first North American Serial Rights. I sold a piece in 92 that I made the mistake of selling all rights, which included the photos. 70 Dollars a printed page for my very first Article was nice, but I could have resold off the same basic story 10 times by now. I think, now that its been 12 years and the publication no longer exists, I could probably get away with updating the statistics and doing new photos and resell it, this time for the First North American Serial Rights.

Sorry about that. I get cut off all the time so I've learned to be quick and not dawdle!:) Do you have any magazines in mind to query yet? Pick atleast 3, study their word count and what specific things they look for in the articles they print. You can also check and see if they have a web site. A lot of times they will and they'll have authors guidelines on there for you to follow when making your submission. Or there's always the Writer's Digest, yearly Writer's Market, it's full of great places to work with and sugestions for how to sell your work. The hardest part is not researching or writing the piece, it's in the query letter and the way it sells your piece.

Thanks for the reply.
I have produced several baskets that have been on diplay at local museums. Also, made a few baskets for movie props. Basket making is so much more than that, and it deserves more attention as a cultural link to our l past. Early technologies enable us to recreate this phenomena.

And now my sweet Julie, I know all about nuts. I don't like to let it get around;) But truly I am certifiable. I s__t you not!:D But I'm on GREAT MEDS! So don't worry about it, I feel we have to be a little bit looped or we wouldn't be able to cope! And about those blues, you're doing the right thing, you look at what is making you blue, but you don't get to be too friendly with it. Look at it, see what it might be about. Put it in a small box and sit it aside while you side track yourself on being the beautiful person that you are. And you dig in to something, anything with great enthusiasm. If that doesn't side track you enough, get another thing, book, movie that there is no way it could have anything to do with real life, then go back to what you were digging into in the first place and finish it up. you may have to get your Blues Mechanism back out of the box once in a while and just peek at it again, but make sure you put it away again too. This way you're not "stuffing" things until you hit overload, ya' know?:) ;) I Love You For Every ounce of blood in your body. And don't you ever forget that. Most natural of all is love and it truly is everywhere, even if we can't see it, it's there. And any time you need a shoulder or just want to chat you can e-mail me here or at lynellarainhawk@yahoo.com and I'll get back to you. Love & Light SIS, Lynella.

Are you still working at the Mashantucket Pequot museum, Julie? I'm dying to visit there.

Julie Jennings

Linda,
I should be back at it late January.
Its a real cool place to work. The most important piece in the museum is the photo gallery that shows the public sobering images of what Indians look like today! Amazing, here we are in the 21 century and everyone is suppose to look like geronimo.
Little do people relize that when European's came to these shores of wealth and religious freedom for themselves, about 12,000 Indians lived in southern New England-8,000 on the main land and 4,000 on the islands. After the King Philip's War (1675-1676) only about 400 Indian people survived. Throughout the years, slavaery, blood mixing, laws, disease, racist attitudes, and isolalation have disintegrated what was left of the First Americans in this region. So, when I hear non-Indian people say, "Some of you don't look Indian." "I tell them one reason is that you and your forfathers accomplished this genocide by not keeping your pants zipped-up!
LOL
