I have been reading the posts on the forum and it appears several of us are trying to figure out what these rolls are all about. They list names and numbers and I have seen letters that I don't know the meaning of. We need to find somebody that is knowledgeable with these rolls that can explain.

I found in Blankenship's "Cherokee Roots" book several of my family names but how do I know they are mine?

Right now I am working with # 168, 199, 861, supposely Seminole and
on Dawes as Cherokee 1136, 11039, 14544, 26632, 28137,32011,32012
I was told that I needed to send for their applications which I was told was about $30.00 per number. I don't know about any of you but I can't afford this. Does any of the Saponitown members know anything about the rolls?

Brenda,
Not much help here.
Vance probably knows more detailed information about this process.
I think you would need the info on the applications to find out what the applicants listed that they thought should be considered for membership AND what the final dispostion of their application was.

I know what you mean about the rolls and numbers. My sister went to the Federal Center to the archives and found microfische of the rolls. I'm supposing they list names numbers and dates. The best way to know if they are your relatives I guess would be to keep researching the family lines comparing all the dates, exact name spellings, siblings names like Bill suggested to me. I have one man with 2 numbers, one from a dawes roll, a Cherokee # 25032, the other number I don't think came from the same roll, but I'll have to ask Donna where she found it is #194. Then there are two women with him. One on the Dawes roll, with an afidavit signed by him, she is his daughter with the number 25031. Then Donna came up with another lady with him where ever she found the other number and her number is 195. So now I have to go way back and find these names, numbers, dates and siblings to make sure these are truly my family. Well, I hope this helped you. I know it's confusing. But we'll all muddle through it together as we are! Love & Light, Lynella.
