Saponi in Kansas?

I work in a medical facility. While talking to a patient I mentioned to him that my Grandmother's maiden name was Hedgepeth (his name also). He explained to me that this name is common to people living in the Rockymount area of NC. He is a part of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe and was asking about my Grandmother's herritage. I asked her where her father grew up and as far as she knows he grew up in Kansas. Does anyone know if there were Saponi people in Kansas and are they connected to the Hedgepeths of N.C.? I had no clue where to start or who to ask so I thought I would ask you. Thanks:)
